ST. ANDREW’S SUNDAY AND BEYOND
SUNDAY, JULY 5, IS THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

WORSHIP: We take our liturgy in two directions this Sunday. It is my last with you so we’ll be talking about departure. It’s also the Sunday closest to July 4 so we worship with a sense of thankfulness for our nation and its heritage. Both services will include the Thanksgiving for the Nation (p. 838 in the BCP). The 10:45 Eucharist includes the singing of several national hymns and a stirring postlude, The Stars and Stripes Forever! Check out this version by the great Chet Atkins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cyiq6lewgOk, or any of may versions on YouTube. Being my last Sunday, I’ve asked for some of my favorite hymns and we will close the service with a Liturgy of Departure. National hymns include My country, ‘tis of thee and God of our Fathers and O Beautiful for Spacious Skies. The choir’s anthem is I vow to thee my Country by Gustav Holst. Other hymns include Jerusalem, my Happy Home and The Church’s One Foundation. 10:45 also includes the sweet smell of incense and the procession of the American flag. There’s a grand reception planned afterwards.

JULY 5 BOOK STUDY will not take place due to Bob's reception.

July 12: BOOK STUDY continues at 9:30 AM, in the Great Hall, to examine The Creed by Luke Timothy Johnson.

CHILDREN: Be sure and pick up your copy of THE SUNDAY PAPER when you enter for worship. It’s an information resource and coloring paper based on the Sunday readings.

THANK YOU: This Sunday being my last, this is also my last SUNDAY AND BEYOND. I have enjoyed writing to you each week. It has always helped me prepare for Sunday and I hope it has you as well. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of your life.

A LITTLE SOUL FOOD

The Zen master Mu-nan sent for his disciple Shoju one day and said, “I am an old man now, Shoju, and it is you who will carry on this teaching. Here is a book that has been handed down for seven generations from master to master. I have myself added some notes to it that you will find valuable. Here, keep it with you as a sign that I have made you my successor.” Shoju burned it immediately!

Zen story from Soul Food, p. 233

One day a rabbi, in a frenzy of religious passion, rushed in before the ark, fell to his knees, and started beating his breast, crying, “I’m nobody! I’m nobody!”

The cantor of the synagogue, impressed by this example of spiritual humility, joined the rabbi on his knees, “I’m nobody! I’m nobody!”

The “shamus” (custodian), watching from the corner couldn’t restrain himself, either. He joined the other two on his knees, calling out, “I’m nobody! I’m nobody!”

At which point the rabbi, nudging the cantor with his elbow, pointed at the custodian and said, “Look who thinks he’s nobody!”
